A few footnotes so nobody accuses us of table tricks:

The BYOK math
The Whisper API costs $0.006 per minute of audio, which is $0.36 per hour. Note that’s per minute of audio — actual talking time, not hours at your desk. Here’s what that comes to at three usage levels, assuming 250 workdays per year:
Light — 5 minutes of audio per workday. That’s a handful of messages and short notes.
5 min × 250 days = 1,250 min/yr × $0.006 = $7.50/yr
Moderate — 15 minutes of audio per workday. Emails, docs, commit messages; dictation as a regular part of your day.
15 min × 250 days = 3,750 min/yr × $0.006 = $22.50/yr
Heavy — 60 minutes of audio per workday. You dictate nearly everything you write.
60 min × 250 days = 15,000 min/yr × $0.006 = $90/yr
Even the heavy tier — a full hour of recorded speech every single workday — costs $90/yr, against $144/yr for a Wispr Flow annual plan. And you pay OpenAI directly at their list price; with a BYOK tool there’s no markup layered on top.
Where’s the break-even?
At what point does BYOK actually cost more than a subscription? Divide the subscription price by the metered rate:
$144/yr ÷ $0.36 per hour of audio = 400 hours of audio per year
Spread over 250 workdays, that’s 400 × 60 ÷ 250 = 96 minutes of dictated audio every workday — an hour and a half of continuous talking, every day, all year. That’s not “I dictate a lot”; that’s professional-transcriptionist territory. Against Aqua Voice’s $96/yr the break-even is lower but still extreme: about 267 hours/yr, or 64 minutes of audio per workday.
For almost everyone, pay-per-use comes in at a tenth to a third of a subscription’s cost. That’s the whole argument for BYOK in one division problem.
The honest caveats
The table makes BYOK look like a rout, so here’s the other side, plainly:
- BYOK requires setup. You need an OpenAI account, an API key, and a payment method on file with OpenAI. It’s a one-time ten-minute chore, but it’s a real hurdle that subscription apps simply don’t have.
- Free tools are genuinely fine for some people. Windows Voice Access is built into Windows 11, fully local, and costs nothing. OpenWhispr is free and open source. If your needs are basic, $0 beats every number in this post.
- Fully local paid tools have no per-use cost at all. Whisperstream ($29, runs entirely on your PC) never sends audio anywhere and never bills you again. If you dictate enormous volumes or want the strongest privacy story, local wins on both counts — including against us.
- Subscriptions buy real things. Wispr Flow’s $144/yr funds polished mobile apps, continuous model improvements, and support. If you dictate on your phone all day, a BYOK Windows app doesn’t replace that, at any price.
